Crypto Billionaire Gives Pledge To Donate Wealth To Charity

Giving Pledge

A cryptocurrency billionaire has agreed to donate the majority of his wealth to charitable causes. Ben Delo has subsequently become the latest success story from the cryptocurrency sector to sign the ‘Giving Pledge’.

Giving Pledge Charity

Ben Delo is the founder of cryptocurrency derivatives exchange BitMEX. The 35-year old said that he would target his donations at catastrophic global threats. Examples would include nuclear war and climate change.

Delo also said he would fund projects set up to tackle the risks of advancing technologies. Artificial intelligence and super-pandemics would fall into that category.

The Giving Pledge, which was devised by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, sees high net worth individuals committing to donate a significant proportion of their wealth to global good causes.

The Giving Pledge organisation describes its aims as “an effort to help address society’s most pressing problems by inviting the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to commit more than half of their wealth to philanthropy or charitable causes either during their lifetime or in their will.”

Giving Pledge A Popular Choice

The initiative has proved a popular choice for philanthropy amongst the world’s billionaires. To date, it has already raised substantial funds towards solving global challenges. In fact, some 204 billionaires across 23 countries have signed up to take part.

In a statement on the Giving Pledge website, Delo then explained the rationale for his philanthropic targets.

“Nuclear security cannot be taken for granted. The prospect of extreme climate change is real. Looking forward, advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and synthetic biology will pose new and complex challenges.”

“I’ve chosen this focus for several reasons. In short, I believe that all lives are valuable, including those of future generations. I expect that a vast and extraordinary future lies ahead if we can navigate the challenges and opportunities posed by new technologies in the upcoming century.”

In signing up to the pledge, Delo becomes only the latest high profile name from the cryptocurrency sector to have agreed to donate. Prior to Delo, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong signed up in December to fund educational causes worldwide.
