The San Jose Earthquakes sides with Coinbase to accept Bitcoin payments for its upcoming home game on May 25, discontinuing its previously reported partnership with BitPay.

“Coinbase’s Bitcoin payment processor adds another cutting edge payment option that further streamlines the commerce experience for fans,” said Dave Kaval, president of the soccer club.

According to him, the Major Soccer League team opted for the Bitcoin payment processing services of Coinbase over BitPay because of the overall user experience it can provide.

The San Francisco-based payment processor boasts a reputable Bitcoin platform with more than 1.2 million consumer wallets, 30,000 merchants, and 5,000 API applications.

With the virtual currency on board the payment methods to be accepted for the Quakes’ match against the Houston Dynamo, soccer fans will be able to purchase game tickets, merchandise, and concessions at the Buck Shaw Stadium using bitcoins, provided that they have a Bitcoin wallet on their mobile devices.

The availability of a Coinbase mobile app allows spectators to make payments in person, resulting in the perfect integration of the payment processor’s services with the Quakes’ point-of-sale system, Kaval said.

“We want to produce a seamless commerce experience with your mobile,” he added.

The acceptance of Bitcoin is but one of Quake’s several ways to innovate its services to cater for the fans Kaval also said.

The San Jose Quakes current home is located near the Silicon Valley, a famous landmark known for the ingenious ideas, inventions, and technologies that have and continue to make the world more advanced. Thus, adding the Bitcoin technology in the sports world is a step closer to fulfilling the tech hub’s primary purpose.

Meanwhile, this also promotes soccer betting through the online sportsbooks in the Bitcoin gambling sector, giving soccer fans more reasons to celebrate by wagering on matches that are featured in Bitcoin sports betting sites while watching the games live.
